Books in Renfro Library are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
Melville Dewey, a librarian, devised this system in 1876, arranging all known knowledge and ideas into 10 broad categories. He assigned numbers to each of these categories, ranging from 000 to 900.
Each of the broad categories is broken down into smaller groupings or subdivisions. Each of these groupings is assigned numbers broken down by 10's, from 10 to 90.
Each of these categories is further broken down to the 1's and topics that are the most specific have classifications using decimals.
The Dewey Decimal System has been revised many times in the past 150 years, taking into account new areas of study and discovery. We are currently using the 22nd edition. |
For example, 700 The Arts 730 Sculpture 738 Pottery 738.38 Pottery of Ancient Greece |
