Renfro Library has great opportunities for students who have work study.

The hours are flexible, we have a great staff, the environment is pleasant, and you can learn a lot.  There are many different job placements, both up front and behind the scenes.  Student workers can learn skills that will be of benefit to them as students and also in their future careers.  Work experience in the library can really enhance a resume.

If you have work study and have the ability to work independently and responsibly without constant supervision, good interpersonal and communication skills, and dependable work habits come and talk with us!

General Guidelines for all Student Staff
  1. Your work in the Library is your first priority.
  2. Do not hesitate to ask your supervisor for assistance at any time.
  3. Always work your scheduled hours.  If you can't make it, it is your responsibility to inform your supervisor.
  4. Always be on time and ready to work when you are scheduled.
  5. Be well and alert when you are at work.
  6. Keep up with your assigned duties.
  7. Be honest.  Things go wrong and mistakes are made; that is okay, it is part of learning and life.  When you have problems or make a mistake, do not blow it off.  Let your supervisor know so we can work together to fix the problem.
  8. Be knowledgeable and ask the supervisors questions so that you can learn new things.  There is always more to know.

Specific Job Descriptions for Student Staff
Job Title: Student Assistant - Acquisitions
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Acquisitions:
  • Ability to perform basic database searching
  • Ability to file accurately.
  • Basic computer competency preferred
Responsibilities and Duties: The Student Assistant in Acquisitions is responsible to the Acquisitions Supervisor for the following duties:
  1. Check in, process, and claim newspapers, periodicals, microforms
  2. Assist Acquisitions Supervisor in placing orders, including searching various databases
  3. Assist Acquisitions Supervisor in receipt of new materials, including maintaining orders-in/orders-out file
  4. Other duties as assigned
Hours: Hours for this job are scheduled between 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Job Title: Student Assistant - Cataloging
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Cataloging:
  • Computer keyboard skills required
  • Ability to type acurately and neatly
  • Familiarity with database editing prefered, but not required
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Cataloging is responsible to the Cataloging Librarian for the following duties:
  1. Physical processing and reprocessing of library books and all types of media
  2. Creating and editing item records for the local online system under close supervision
  3. Deleting records for discarded books in the local online system under close supervision
  4. Physical processing of discarded materials
  5. Distributing processed materials to different departments
  6. Other duties as assigned
Hours: Hours for this job are scheduled between 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Job Title: Student Assistant - Collection Development
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Collection Development:
  • Ability to file accurately
  • Ability to perform basic database searching
  • Some ability to type, computer experience helpful
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Collection Development is responsible to the Collection Development Librarian for the following duties:
  1. Physical processing of discarded materials
  2. Check bibliographies against the library catalog
  3. Other duties as assigned
Hours: Hours for this job are scheduled between 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Job Title: Student Assistant - Interlibrary Loan
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Interlibrary Loan:
  • Ability to file accurately
  • Minimal mechanical skills for operating microfilm/microfiche reader/printers, photocopy machines and fax machine
  • Ability to follow instructions
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Interlibrary Loan is responsible to the Interlibrary Loan Supervisor for the following duties:
  1. Assist the Interlibrary Loan Supervisor with receiving and shipping interlibrary loan materials
  2. Maintain, with accuracy, the interlibrary loan files
  3. Compile monthly interlibrary loan statistics
  4. Other duties as assigned
Hours: Hours for this job are scheduled between 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Job Title: Student Assistant - Periodicals
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Periodicals:
  • Ability to file accurately
  • Minimal mechanical skills for operating microfilm/microfiche reader/printers
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Periodicals is responsible to the Periodicals Supervisor for the following duties:
  1. Assist the Periodicals Supervisor with the organization and maintenance of the Periodicals Collection
  2. Assist the Periodicals Supervisor with maintaining the MHC Periodical Holdings List
  3. Assist with preparation of materials to be sent to the bindery
  4. Other duties as assigned

Job Title: Student Assistant - Public Services / Circulation
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Public Services / Circulation:
  • Ability to master the Dewey Decimal System and to file accurately
  • Minimal mechanical skills for operating photocopy machines and printers.
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Public Services is responsible to the Public Services Superviors for the following duties:
  1. Checking materials in and out, collecting fees, maintaining accurate records
  2. Assisting patrons with basic directional information regarding use of the library facility
  3. Assist with opening or closing the library
  4. Physically maintain the library collection, including shelving and shelf reading
  5. Answer the telephone and refer calls.
Hours:  Hours for this job will be scheduled between Monday through Thursday 8 am to 11 pm, Friday 8 am to 4 pm, Saturday 11 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 11 pm Sunday. Occasional weekend hours will be assigned on a rotation.

Job Title: Student Assistant - Reference Services
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Reference Services:
  • Ability to file accurately and to master the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to perform basic database searching
  • Basic computer competency preferred (Windows-based software; primarily Word)
  • Must have a sense of humor and be flexible.
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Reference Services is responsible to the Reference Services Librarian for the following duties:
  1. Physical preparation of materials for Research Instruction
  2. Physical maintance of the Reference Collection, including shelving and shelf reading
  3. Accurately filling out order cards
  4. Assisting in maintaining various files, including reference orders, standing orders, publishers catalogs and professional journals.
  5. Other duties as assigned
Hours: Hours for this job are scheduled between 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Job Title: Student Assistant - Special Collections
Qualifications:  In addition to the minimum requirements required for all Student Assistants, the following qualifications are established for the position of Student Assistant in Special Collections:
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly without constant supervision
  • Good interpersonal / communication skills
  • Dependable work habits
  • Ability to perform detailed tasks while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to file accurately
  • Some ability to type, computer experience helpful
Responsibilities and Duties:  The Student Assistant in Special Collections is responsible to the Special Collections Supervisor for the following duties:
  1. Perform duties as assigned which may include the following:
    • assist patrons in locating Special Collections materials,
    • shelving materials,
    • filing materials,
    • copying materials,
    • other duties as assigned.
  2. Answer telephone and take messages.
  3. Greet and work with Special Collections patrons as needed.
  4. Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
Hours: Hours for this job are between 1 to 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
